Kory Scott Browning

Kory Scott Browning - July 23, 1973 - November 24, 2025 Kory was a devoted husband, loving father, son, brother, fine fisherman, and faithful employee of the Department of Corrections who enjoyed his time in the outdoors, attending his daughters sporting events, trips with his family and spending time with friends. On November 24, 2025, Kory Browning of Chesterfield, Michigan, lost his short yet, courageous battle with cancer. Kory was born in Flint, Michigan on July 23, 1973 to parents Steven “Ken” Browning and Ann Marie Browning. He was the third of three children who attended school in Mt. Morris, Mi. While attending high school, Kory was often shy but popular amongst his classmates and friends, and was an accomplished athlete playing baseball and hockey. He was voted “Best Dressed” his senior year, an accolade in which he took great pride, often times reminding his wife and daughters of this high school accomplishment. In the spring of 1991, he graduated from EA Johnson High school before beginning his freshman year at Lake Superior State University in Sault St. Marie, MI. Throughout his time in the Soo, Kory forged many lifelong friendships and lasting memories with college mates that carried on till this day. He was still an accomplished athlete in his own mind, but then it was broom ball and beer league softball. He graduated in 1997 with a Bachelors of Science specializing in Criminal Justice before beginning his career with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Kory served 27 years with the MDOC, once again creating many long and lasting friendships with fellow officers along the way. The DOC fortified his belief in integrity and doing the “right thing” which he often demonstrated throughout his life. Regardless of whether he was stopping a drunk driver in a neighborhood full of kids on Halloween night, pulling someone from a car wreck, or helping to find a missing autistic child, Kory could be counted on to make things right. In 2002, Kory met Barb Secord (Browning), the woman who would become his wife. They married in June 2006 and in 2025 celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary. In their 23 years together, they shared in many adventures and much joy beginning with the birth of their daughter Skylar in March 2005 followed by Sydney in April of 2008. They often attended sporting events, concerts, travel sports trips for their daughters, and one of their favorite events every year, the annual July 4th Raguckasfest in Six Lakes. Kory dearly loved his friends, especially his lifelong friend and brother Bill “Billy” Davis who preceded him in death in 2021. He also loved his dogs, both the ones that were permanent fixtures at home, and the ones that were temporary fosters. His beloved girl Berkley will be there to greet him in heaven while Wrigley, Bowser, and Yoshi will reunite with him some day as well. Kory will always be remembered as a loving, kind, caring, fair, firm and big-hearted man. He will be remembered as a great father, husband, son, brother, and friend who loved to fish, loved his dogs, and was always ready with the retelling of a story from his past. He enjoyed the frequent “Berkshire” gatherings being sure to let everyone know when a song was a “Banger” even though he’d only let you listen to it for about 6 seconds. He took delight in playfully telling people, “you got no game” or “BOOM! ROASTED!” and often referred to friends and family members as “Bruh”, “Homie” or “Dude”. We couldn’t have asked for a better person to have in all our lives. Kory’s love, humor, and kindness will be missed every day. His memory, pictures, and stories will live on in the hearts of all those who loved and knew him so dearly. Kory is survived by his wife Barb Browning, daughters Skylar and Sydney Browning, parents, Steven and Ann Browning, brother Kendall Browning, sister Kelli Harcek and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you would kindly make donations to Angles of Hope and/or The New Day Foundation in Kory’s honor. Both of these great foundations were instrumental in supporting the family during Kory’s battle. Visitation hours will be Thursday December 4th, 2025 from 3pm to 8pm at Wasik Funeral Home located at 35259 23 Mile Rd., New Baltimore, MI The Service will be held on Friday December 5th, 2025. Visitation will be at 10am until the service begins at 11am, also at the Funeral Home.
