Thomas Patrick Doran, aged 89, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 27, 2018, at home in Macomb, Michigan, surrounded by his four children. Tom was born at home on March 13, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan to Daniel and Helen (nee Quinn) Doran. He grew up in Detroit, graduating from St. Catherine’s in 1947. Education was very important to Tom. He worked for the City of Detroit as a water meter reader for several years to pay for his college tuition. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Masters Degree from the University of Detroit. Tom taught at various schools in the Warren Fitzgerald School District during his 29 year teaching career – he was the physical education teacher at several elementary schools including Neigebaur Elementary and then taught Language Arts at Chatterton Middle School for many years. Tom would often have students in his class whose parents he had also taught. Tom met his beloved wife Jeanne Marie Martinie when they were placed on the same bowling team in a Catholic bowling league in 1959. They were married on August 6, 1960 and enjoyed just over 52 years of marriage before her death in May 2013. Tom was a man of great faith. He was an active parishioner at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Highland Park, Michigan for over 30 years; serving in the parish community as an Usher, Lector and Eucharistic Minister. Once Tom retired, he attended Mass daily for many years until he was no longer able due to health reasons. Tom had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good conversation. One of his favorite responses to the inquiry, "How do you feel?" was "with my hands." Family was always near and dear to Tom’s heart. There is nothing he enjoyed more than spending time with his children, adored grandchildren and other family members. Many a summer night was spent playing card games such as Euchre and Pinochle with Jeanne and their children in their pre-teen and teen years. A phone call from his grandchildren with news of a school project or any activity would brighten his whole day. He is survived by his four children – Mary Elizabeth Doran, Thomas Joseph (Ann Marie) Doran, James Michael (Bonnie Lynn) Doran and Therese Marie (Sean Francis) Gallagher; grandchildren Thomas Liam Doran and Mary Ginger Doran and siblings Helen Suzanne (Frank) Bruck, William James (Lois) Doran and Joseph Edward Doran as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Jeanne (nee Martinie) Doran, parents, Daniel and Helen Doran, brother Daniel Joseph (the late Angeline) Doran and infant sister Mary Elizabeth Doran. We thank the caregivers and the Beaumont Hospice team who took such good care of Tom and helped us keep him comfortably at home during the last year.
