Roy Walter Hopkins

Roy W. Hopkins was a fun-loving family man. Married to the love of his life, Sylvia, they shared 54 years together in marriage. Loving husband of the late Sylvia. Loving father of Bonnie Stoehn, Roy W. Hopkins, Jr., Kenneth (Cyndi) Hopkins, Debbie (Mike) Wilson and the late Robert Hopkins. Cherished grandfather of Lisa (Mike) and Brian (Erica) and great-grandfather of Milly, Dakota and Lexy. Dear brother of Marcella (Norm) Markel and Helen (the late Bob) Schultz. Roy is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews and long-time, family friend, the late Phyllis Schenkus. We suppose Dad was always made for adventure. Growing up on his family farm he had many experiences that made for a colorful childhood. His term serving in the Navy took him overseas where he spent time in Africa, Italy, and France. After service he returned to the States where he met mom. Driving his Kenworth over the road for a living never slowed him down at home. Summers, he could be found boating on the weekends and ice fishing in the winter. He celebrated family vacations in northern Michigan. Strong willed and joyful he always said yes to adventure. Together he and mom drove their motorhome coast-to-coast exploring America in retirement. His personal hobbies included late night card games, bible study, classic country music and western movies. Dad supported every whim mom thought up. A do-it-yourselfer, he built four of our family homes. He entertained mom’s ideas to add an addition, build a gazebo, redo a bathroom, on and on, and never said no to her. He stopped at every garage sale she had to visit. Dad was social and peopled loved talking with him. He had a real affection for food. Spending time with family at Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth was one of his favorite activities. He enjoyed a simple cup of coffee and loved homemade deserts of all kinds but missed mom’s cooking most. In his later years, dad demonstrated the will to continue to enjoy life. He walked the long trail to Tahquamenon Falls, he insisted he climb the Crisp Point Lighthouse tower and after a full day of activity, sat quietly to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan with a deep admiration. Dad, we will miss you dearly and we will carry you with us, always. Be at peace. Visitation for Roy will be from 11:00 a.m. until a 12:00 p.m. funeral service on Friday, August 30, 2024 at the Wasik Funeral Home located at 35259-23 Mile Road in New Baltimore.
