Michael Thornton

THORNTON, Michael Frederick Michael Frederick Thornton passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 73. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose love, laughter, faith, and unwavering devotion to his family touched countless lives. Mike was the beloved husband of Marianne (Reznik). Together, they shared 51 years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and their strong Christian faith. Their marriage was the foundation of a family that Mike cherished above all else. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Lilah and Rolland Thornton; his sister, Laureen “Lori” Arnone; and his brother, James Thornton. He is survived by his sister, Donna Dzieszko; his identical twin brother, Patrick “Pat” Thornton; Rolland Laethem; many nieces and nephews, and several close friends. Mike and Pat shared the one-of-a-kind bond of identical twins. They created countless memories together and took part in plenty of shenanigans, giving them stories to laugh about for years to come. Their special connection remained an important part of Mike’s life. He was most proud of his three children: Melissa (Jay Gilbert), Michael (Taylor), and Megan. He was their biggest fan and never missed the moments that mattered. He was at every dance recital for Melissa and Megan and every baseball and basketball game for Michael. Everyone knew exactly where to find him, whether it was in the outfield at baseball games or propped against the wall at basketball games. Family meant everything to Mike. He looked forward to every family trip to Disney World and every Christmas Eve and Fourth of July spent surrounded by his parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews. He loved taking his kids to Pistons games and out for dinners at his favorite restaurants. Those traditions became part of the fabric of his family, and Mike made sure they continued for generations to come. In 2013, Mike took on one of the roles he treasured most: Papa. Nobody could make Papa light up quite like his eight grandchildren: Samuel, Chloe, Everett, Max, Ellis, August, Brooks, and Navy. He had a special way of making each one of them feel seen, loved, and important. Papa was notorious for yelling, “That’s my grandson!” with a huge smile on his face from the sidelines. He never missed one of Chloe’s dance recitals or an opportunity to snuggle Navy. Whether he was cheering from the stands, watching them swim and fish in the lake, taking them out for ice cream, or sneaking them whipped cream when Mimi wasn't looking, Mike made sure they knew just how much they were loved. That was Papa. He showed up. He cheered loudly. He celebrated every accomplishment, big or small, as if it were the greatest thing in the world. Mike was an All-American football player and was a lifelong sports fan who loved the Detroit Tigers and Lions. He was obsessed with his fantasy football leagues and even created little sports-card fanatics out of his grandchildren. Mike started his career leading his parents' photography company, North American Photography. Inspired by his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, he started his own real estate company called Michael & Associates Realtors. His influence extended beyond his work, and he was proud to inspire his son, Michael, to follow in his footsteps and become a real estate broker in Chicago. His career allowed him to cross paths with countless people throughout the community. He had a tremendous heart for community service and helping others, another value he shared with Marianne. Throughout the years, he volunteered his time with several organizations. He served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Utica in the 1990s, founded the charity, Helping Hands of Macomb, and supported close friends in establishing the Robby Atherton Foundation. He utilized his vast real estate knowledge by serving on the Shelby Township Planning Commission. Giving back was simply part of who Mike was. He believed in being there for people and making a difference wherever he could. Even in his passing, Mike found another way to help others. He was able to donate his organs, giving the gift of life and leaving this world better than he found it. It was a final reflection of the generous spirit that defined so much of his life. Mike’s greatest legacy will not be found in a title, a career, or an accomplishment. It will be found in the family he loved so fiercely, the traditions he carried forward, the people he encouraged, the communities he served, and the countless memories he left behind. He was Dad. He was Papa. He was Papa T. He was the loud voice on the sidelines, the sports-card collector, the Christmas tradition keeper, the devoted husband, and the proudest father and grandfather. And to the people who loved him most, he was someone who made life fuller, family stronger, and every gathering a little more special just by being there. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026 from 3:00 pm until a 7:00 pm evening service at Wasik Funeral Home, Inc., 49150 Schoenherr Road (north of 22 Mile Road), Shelby Township.
