Janice Yvonne Zablocki

Janice Zablocki, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and dedicated nurse, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025. After defying the odds and living more than a decade beyond her original cancer diagnosis, she continued to lead an active, full, and meaningful life. She passed on her own terms at the age of 82, surrounded by her family until the end. Born on January 9, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, daughter to the late, Genevieve and John Ortmann, Janice graduated from Edwin Denby High School in 1961. It was there she met the love of her life, Richard, her devoted husband and partner of nearly 60 years. Determined and quietly strong, Janice earned her nursing degree from Wayne County Community College while raising three children. During that time, her husband worked the midnight shift at GM, and together they managed family rental properties in Detroit. Remarkably, she accomplished her education without seeking recognition or assistance, embodying her lifelong humility and perseverance. Janice devoted her life to caring for others. She began her nursing career at Harper Hospital in Detroit and later spent more than two decades serving patients at Bi-County Hospital (Henry Ford Hospital) in Warren. Her compassion, patience, and gentle spirit touched countless lives throughout her career. At home, Janice found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved tending her garden and spending time among her flowers, as well as caring for her beloved cats. She delighted in going to garage sales, both to help her family and to discover unique and interesting treasures. Janice also cherished time outdoors—camping in everything from a tent to a pop-up trailer and eventually a travel trailer—and later enjoying peaceful days at the family cottage on Russell Island. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard Zablocki (2019), and her sister, Joann Schings (2009). She is survived by her children, Mark Zablocki; Susan Atkinson (Mark); and David Zablocki (Cheryl); her grandchildren, Lauren, Charlotte, Jessica, and Nathan; and many other relatives and dear friends who will cherish her memory. A Celebration of Life was held in October 2025. Janice will be remembered for her caring heart, her unwavering love of family, and the gentle, steady way she made the world a better place.
