Irene T Szambelan

Irene Szambelan passed away, surrounded by her family, at The Pines Senior Living Center in Sterling Heights on June 1, 2025 at the age of 100. Irene was born in Hamtramck on October 31, 1924 to Burt and Domicela Orlowski. Irene led an amazing life and she was blessed with good health for the majority of her life and this was most exemplified by the fact that she was bowling into her 80s. Other than bowling Irene had many other passions. She was well known for her crocheting and crafting abilities. When she wasn't found with a crocheting needle in her hand Irene could often be found with a bingo dobber or a deck of pinochle cards occupying that hand. Irene also loved her 'junk food' and, growing up in Detroit, Better Made potato chips were her go-to snack along with black licorice and dark chocolate. Irene was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith. She prayed the Rosary every single day and attended Mass regularly. Her favorite saying when someone was leaving was "Have a blessed day!". The single most important thing to Irene, however, was her love of her family. Her children, grand children and great-grandchildren held a special place in Irene's heart and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Beloved wife of the late John. Loving mother of Chrissy (Edward) Sprock, Robert (Sara) Szambelan, Sharon (Mike) Manzo, and the late Larry Szambelan. Very proud grandmother of John (Liz), David (Carmen), Matthew (Maeve), Anna (Ian), Michael (Chelsea), Robyn, Nicholas (Marissa), Andrew (Erin), Daniel, and Rachel (Anthony). Also very proud great grandmother of Eva, Julia, Scarlett, EJ, Finn, Connolly, Olivia, Warren, and Kennedy. Dear sister of the late Lillian Orlowski. Visitation Sunday 2-8 PM with a 4:00 PM Rosary at the Wasik Funeral Home, Inc. 49150 Schoenehrr Rd. (n. of 22 Mile Rd.), Shelby Twp. Instate Monday 9:30 AM until 10:00 AM Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Catholic Church 44633 Utica Road (s. of M-59), Utica. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
