Allegra M. DeMaire

Sunrise - May 30, 1934 Sunset - June 7, 2023 Allegra May DeMaire of New Haven passed away with her family by her side. Allegra was born in New Baltimore, Michigan; the daughter of George & Mary Ethel (Card) Steiner. She attended New Haven Schools & graduated from Rose City High School. She married the late Joseph H. DeMaire on September 10, 1960. Allegra was a life long member of The First Congregational Church of New Haven. During the summer she enjoyed walking her grandchildren to Sunday School and Church. Allegra held several positions in the church from Sunday School Treasurer, Church Treasurer, Secretary and Moderator. Allerga was a proud member of John Stockton Women's Relief Corp, which marched in Memorial Day Parades as color guard. She was also a member of AMVETS Auxiliary Post 72 of New Haven, member of Armada AMVETS Auxiliary Post 93 and member of The Blue Water Red Hatters. Allegra loved traveling; she attended yearly 4 C’s church conferences, visited Ireland, Italy and Australia. She had a love of teaching neighborhood children math skills and designed a special times table chart to help them learn. During summer months she would load her car with neighborhood kids and go to the AMVET pool. Allegra was very active with her children, helping with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She never hesitated to give someone a ride to church, the store or doctors appointments. In the early days of computers she helped Pastor Mack and Greater New Hope Baptist set up their very first computer system and taught them how to use it. She started working in 1966 as a book keeper for Detroit Edison and retired in 2004 from Allied Safety Restraint. For the past 9 years her grandson Frank Ulicny III has been her full time caregiver, companion and best friend. He drove her to Red Hatter luncheons, church, doctor appointments as well as frequent drives along the St. Clair river to enjoy the water, freighters and a ice cream cone. She enjoyed putting puzzles together, playing solitaire and word search on her iPad. The beloved wife of the late Joseph Henry DeMaire. Loving mother of Dianne (Francis) Ulicny, William (Denise) DeMaire and Evelyn Durst. Dear grandmother to Francis Ulicny III, Rachael Chartier, Michael Durst, Nicholas Durst, Acacia Smith, Daniel DeMaire and Michael Allen. Great grandmother to, Liv and Levi Chartier, Alvin, Signe, Nils, Emilia, Carl Durst and Aspen Smith. Dear sister of Frazier (the late Donna) Steiner. Predeceased by her father George Steiner, mother Mary Ethel (Card) Steiner, brothers Melvin, George and Nelson. A celebration of Allegra’s Life will be held at the First Congregational Church located at 58801 Main Street in New Haven on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. Visitation will be at the church from 1 - 3 p.m. with Services following at 3 p.m., officiated by Pastor Michael McDonald. Internment immediately following the service at Centennial Cemetery in New Haven.
